I've isolated the problem. Kernels compile fine if I disable the
RTL8821AE driver (currently in staging).

I did this:
$ make -j4
LD drivers/video/built-in.o
Makefile:843: recipe for target 'drivers' failed
make: *** [drivers] Error 2
And got the same problem... I guess it's not debian related. Sorry
