It's fixed in the upstream, but xdg-utils package wasn't updated for
whole 3 years now (looking at the version). Here's the relevant
commit:

I am not yet sure if this is a bug in xdg-utils, or in desktop-file-utils. But,
clearly there is some dissonance here.
Reading the freedesktop docs, one is lead to believe that dropping a .desktop
file in /usr/share/applications
