Wrong ... sorry ... my failure ... texi2pdf.1 contains only a
reference to texi2dvi and here the Deibna is used.

It's also wrong in that I _do_ have a working tex (namely that
provided by texlive-binaries).
I suspect that both points are the result of excessive faith in
help2man.
