So it turns out I had a local install at /home/$user/perl5 which was messing up
the running of Perl -- I noticed this after running into the
same problem with another module today.

A simple rebuild fixes this problem (via apt-get source, then
dpkg-buildpackage, then dpkg -i .deb). Presumably the current Debian
binary package was last updated prior to the Perl API change.
