this is what I found:
\documentclass{minimal}
%\usepackage{textcomp}
\usepackage{microtype}
\usepackage{siunitx}
\begin{document}
\SI{1}{\micro\second}
\end{document}
Then use xelatex.
The problem seems to be caused by the use of the ยต character if the
microtype package is used
