I've implemented a configuration variable, "xserver-allow-vt-switch", which inhibits the hard-coded "-novtswitch" flag. I've emailed the patches to the maintainer and have pushed the changes to the "vtswitch" branch here: https://github.com/davvid/lightdm/commits/vtswitch I hope this helps other
