Since the upgrade to GNOME 3.8 hit sid, I also lost the ability to
suspend my computer. I came across this bug report searching for a
solution. Thanks for pointing us to a (temporary ?) solution with:

NP900X3C because lid detection doesn't work properly on this model. But
since upgrading to GNOME 3.8 pressing the power button only turns off
the display. I think
