It took me a while to integrate the patch from Hans, but when I was
already at it, I packaged the current version:

Last time I checked the maintainer's mail address was bouncing,
so he probably doesn't know about this bug report.
I'd be willing to help with an NMU if you'd be interested in
uploading a package including your fix to mentors.

I have attached a patch which solves this problem by adding the lua5.1 dev
package to the build dependencies. After adding it, the package built
successfully using pbuilder.
