It took "some" time before I got back home and had time to try this.
I can confirm that version 1.0.24 is working properly. I am running
Wheezy now, compiled the package from source. The binary is available in
Testing, but pulls in a number of other dependencies from Testing. So I
preferr
I also have an avision-based scanner (Xerox DocuMate 510), and encountered
the reported issue with the version of sane-utils in wheezy.
I downloaded the later version of the package source from unstable, built
the package, and verified it resolved the problem.

could you give it a try with the version of libsane available in the
experimental repositories? Chances are your issue has been fixed
in the newer version.

In Debian Wheezy the Avision scanner does not work anymore.
The scanner is detected fine:
