I agree with your concern about lock-out from the cron job not
running. Unfortunately, shield-purge (which does the actual work when
called by the cron job) also had a stack of problems in 0.9.2 that
could lead to the same result. I did try my best to get fixes in for
wheez

pam_shield.cron never gets run by run-parts since '.' is illegal in cron
filenames. In turn this means that shield-purge does not get run and then,
presumably, stale shield rules don't get flushed.
