I had the same problem.
My apache2 and nginx (as a reverse proxy) tried to run simultaneously
on port 80. The command 'cat /var/run/nginx.pid' returns no pid.
I now use different ip numbers for listen and it works. :-)
In the unconfigured defaults nginx listens to 0.0.0.0:80.
