I gave this another try. Did a purge, started everything from scratch.
Exact same error. Now I tried to run hostapd in foreground mode, here is
what I got with double debug output:

Hi Stefan,
I'm using hostapd as a daemon because my wlan is in a bridge, and this is the
only way that it used to work some time ago, it didn't work with ifupdown. See
http://bugs.debian.org/600589. Is it supported now? It would be nice to move
to a more supported solution.
