Does Hurd support pathconf("/var/spool/news", _PC_PATH_MAX)? Which value does it return? Does Hurd return a value no smaller than _POSIX_PATH_MAX (256)? I might consider replacing PATH_MAX by a pathconf all to the spool directory for systems where PATH_MAX is missing, because that is covered by
