Applying the disable NMI watchdog workaround has been successful on my
setup and provided a stable system over several (>10) boot cycles.

FYI. Problem remains also for recent kernel and virtualbox versions.
Confirmed to still occur for the following versions:
ii linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae 3.2.18-1
Linux 3.2 for modern PCs
ii virtualbox 4.1.14-dfsg-1
x86 virtualization solut
Seems the problem is related with:
1) combination of host/guest system's architecture,
2) host system kernel.
To make this clear, I have conducted a set of experiments.
The host machine is a eMachines e732g laptop with Debian Squeeze i386 installed.
