This is not really fixed in experimental.
Since GTK 3.8, building GTK with the "--enable-broadway-backend" is not
enough. It is also necessary to provide the "broadwayd" binary.
Currently, on experimental:
$ GDK_BACKEND=broadway gtk3-demo
Unable to init server
(gtk3-demo:28478): Gtk-WAR

The broadway back-end allows one to render gtk windows remotely using
HTML5. Please enable it.
This can be done with the following configure arguments:
--enable-x11-backend --enable-broadway-backend
