I opened a bug report 2 months ago on Launchpad since the Stopmotion
project has moved to Launchpad:

Tim Band provided several patches that fix the issue in several
components, see comments #4, #8, #15 and #20. He also found a bug in
libtar that avoids

I can reproduce this bug using an image with a pure ASCII filename but a
parent directory containing an accentuated character.
