The sequence of installs below seems to have fixed the problem and I can no
longerreproduce it either with /usr/lib/xscreensaver/endgame nor with fgfs [the
latter made the problem appear within 1 minute and shortly after froze the X
server every time.]
I am still using the original kernel instal
