I can confirm: currently, gnome is useless!
However, I do not think the problem is related to gnome-panel, because the same
version is in wheezy, where I don't see any problems.
I suspect that the cause is to be found in gtk

I have found two errors that seem to be the source of this condition. 1st: Any
time I set any panel to be transparent cpu usage jumps immediately. Xorg
and gnome-panel use 100% of the cpu. When setting the panel to be

On log in gnome-panel and Xorg use 100% of cpu. gnome-panel will sometimes
show up on the desktop, and sometimes won't, but either way it
causes high cpu usage. If any panel applets are being used they share equally
