After a little further research it appears that others feel this is a
bug with xserver not gdm3.

After recently updating Debian Squeeze, the mouse cursor is invisible. The
mouse still functions normally but the cursor is not seen at any time. If the
system is suspended the mouse cursor is visible upon waking the system.
