Hi,
it seems the firmware it's needed for 3d acceleration, not 'standard' graphics.
I saw several similar references to the same problem in Imac G3 that can be
solved configuring Xorg with proper frequencies for the screen.
Please see the xorg.conf example in [1]. I found more references to xorg.

From what i've googled the console outside X should be working so you can
change to a console (e.g. ctrl+1).

I can now turn off the screen using fn+F1 (two keys on the iBook keyboard).
That may or may not be because I installed pmud and pmud-utils.
I can also boot into Mac OS X.
That means that the only issue left is that I can't use the local display in
