We have also just hit this problem and would like to see a fix. Since it
is so simple to fix, can we have the Severity upgraded and have a fix
available in the next release of squeeze?

The init script checks whether snmptrapd is supposed to be running in
start and stop, but not in status. so it either needs a separate init
scripts for the two daemons, or a wrapper around status that checks if
it something should be running.
