I think you're supposed to use clean,a-i if the module was previously
built? (It's been a while since I last worked on m-a, sorry.)

Today I've installed new kernel: was 2.6.31, became 2.6.32.
After installing but before reboot I started module-assistant to
rebuild nvidia-kernel-sourse.
I usually use the command like this:
module-assistant a-i -l 2
