It's start-stop-daemon that's printing the warning message, isn't it?
log_end_msg doesn't seem related.

Shouldn't you be the one doing this testing? :p

Hmm, lighttpd has --quiet --oknodo and it doesn't show any warning

Its already there. Without the --quiet switch, the output is ways
more verbose.

Olaf,
i'm not sure if i get this correctly: --oknodo is specified and
behaves correctly:
unstable:/home/sb/mpt-status-1.2.0# /etc/init.d/mpt-statusd start
Starting mpt-status monitor: mpt-statusd.
So it's running - i kill it now manually to trigger your reported
problem and try to stop it now:
Package: mpt-status
Version: 1.2.0-4.2
Severity: normal
Hi,
On stop, the start stop daemon isn't called with oknodo and this results in a
warning message: can't find process (apparently the process died already).
