I ran into the same problem here, permission denied
on /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp.
As I found this bug I chmod'ed the directory as I was in a hurry. I am
currently upgrading to current sid, so let's see if the problem
resurfaces.

installing package cups-pdf definitely is the step which causes the
directory permissions on /usr/lib/cups/backend to change.
After installing that package, only root has permissions.
Purging the package does not restore the permissions.
As you say, it appears to be 585153

After I changed from hpijs to hpcups I could see the reason in the
error_log. The problem here were wrong permissions (0755)
of /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp . I changed permissions to 0700 and the
driver back to hpijs and it
