no, you don't need to specify the username.
what you need is to add 'live-config' to your boot parameters, see 'man
live-config' why. live-helper 2.0~a13-1 and newer adds this automatically.
Verified. I can now login again. The complete workaround is:
lh config -r live.debian.net
lh config --bootappend-live live-config.username=myuser
