I looked into it again and found out the following:
in /usr/share/hplip/ui4/systemtray.py I added after line 655:
log.debug(icon)
then I started hp-systray -g in debug mode and the relevant output is
the following:
hp-systray(qt4)[5380]: debug:
file:///usr/share/hplip/data/images/32x32/erro

as I've sent you already on June 15th the problem with missing icons in
kde notifications is not fixed (e.g. the attached picture of that mail
from June 15th). The last uploaded hplip-packages don't fix that, too!

every action/information of hplip, for example "Print job started" or "No
paper", is shown by the KDE notification system. The icons in those messages
