I saw the same problem on my desktop box yesterday, it's got DDR3 CL9 RAM
on a Gigabyte motherboard with an AMD 790X chipset. It "detected" 640KB.
Booting the non-multiboot image makes it work just fine.
Please at a minimum restore the grub menuentry for the old image.
