Perhaps more suprising is that, although you can set MINTMPKB in
/etc/default/mountoverflowtmp to specify the threshold for mounting
an emergency /tmp, this does not affect the size of the tmpfs. The
result is that the emergency tmpfs may actually be much smaller than
the available space in the rea

When overflowtmp is mounteed on /tmp many things fail because the /tmp
is too small. This is true even if space is later freed in the /
filesystem. Among other things it prevents building an initrd because it
is built on /tmp.
