I have a similar problem. Inserting of some burned CD/DVDs leads to this error:

I have got the same problem.
Additionally, I can't play any audio CD. Although, when I put a DVD, I
can play the videos, without any problem. Or if I put a data DVD, I
can browse the directories and open the files.
KsCD and Kaffeine don't play the audio CD.

I have got the same problem and it is no HW issue, because the drive works
properly with
ubuntu.
It has the problem with almost all DVDs I have. And it takes ages to start one.
ATM I boot over,
but thats no solution, is it?

No errors show up in the syslog (or dmesg) after I run those commands.
I tried reproducing these errors on another laptop and I do get
similar messages/errors. This laptop is a one-year-old core 2 duo
(running unstable) and I get the following after inserting a DVD:
