Hi,
Could you please run lintian under strace and attach the output to the bug
report (only on the case where it fails)?
This should do it:
strace -f -o lintian.log lintian ghostscript_8.64-5_i386.deb
Hopefully the strace log will provide enough details to hunt down this bug.
