This is a rather old bug, but I still came across with it on an up-to-date
Debian Stretch (on March 2019).
In my case it was caused by TeamViewer, after uninstalling it (and
rebooting), the problem was gone.
So for other people that may come across this issue, I'd like to emphasise
that you really
confirmed: killing xfce4-settings-helper makes copy-pasting working again in
inkscape.
also i have the impression that the error does not occur upon copying but
upon pasting. (but my computer is very slow, so it may be lagging a bit)

Hi Pieter,
I'm not sure how you check if your clipboard is being monitored.
There is a list of software that is known to cause problems in the
upstream report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/418242
Do you see anything there that you recognise?

I have the same problem on xubuntu 11.04 (so running inkscape in xfce
environment).
I open a new document, create a rectangle, select it, hit ctrl-c, bang...
How do you check if something is using/watching your clipboard? i don't have
xfce4-clipman running.
Pieter
Hi Marco,
The bug actually is triggered by a few different programs that monitor
the clipboard, not just by xfce4-clipman-plugin. Please see the list
in the upstream report.
Thanks,
Alex

I've found that This error appears when xfce4-clipman-plugin. If you close
or kill this application, Inkscape does not complain.
I think the problem is not Inkscape, but clipman plugin in this case. It
also makes mousepad fail to Find & Replace properly:

Package: inkscape
Version: 0.47.0-2+b1

I have the same problem. I tried to import wmf and get this error:
UniConvertor failed:
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/uniconvertor/app/utils/locale_utils.py:9:
DeprecationWarning: The popen2 module is deprecated. Use the subprocess
module.

Hi Wolfi,
the error just did reoccur and I gave google a try and found this:

In fact, there is a java-based program running monitoring my clipboard, so
this is the reason for this strange behaviour. Dun

Hi.
After upgrading to the latest version, inkscape complains about UniConvertor
after copying a previously created object (circle, box, text, may also be
triggered by other operations):
UniConvertor failed:
