The chroot has been setup using debootstrap on an USB stick. I also
installed a kernel, but I would guess in the chroot the path
/lib/modules/`uname -r` is not valid:
# uname -v
#1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 15 18:39:36 CEST 2009
# uname -r
2.6.31.4
# ls -

Thanks for your bug-report.
It's not clear that this is a bug in cryptmount, and it
likely that the problems you're having are very dependent on the
details of your 'chroot' filesystem.
It would appear that the absence of the '/lib/modules/...' files
within your chr
