So, the source of all the trouble was a buggy libgnutls26 (v 2.8.1-2).
Upgrade to 2.8.3-3 fixed the problem.

The problem is that subversion breaks on a checkout attempt with the error
message "Network socket initialization failed". As far, as i understand this
failes function ne_sock_init() in subversion/libsvn_ra_neon/session.c.
