I have the same problem. My specs:
- Debian unstable (installed a week ago).
- Kernel 2.6.32 (due to graphics drivers incompatible, for now, with
2.6.38).
- Brother HL-2030 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 [en] driver
When I try to print with my Brother Hl-2030 it doesn't work. I have

I do not remember the details, but I do recall commit(s) on the gs-cvs
list affecting the semantics of the bit device.
An svn log on the gs repo suggests that revision 9452 may be relevant.
