Oh yeah, and I also haven't installed gnome either, just the base
system, priority standard, and the desktop and laptop tasks (as
presented in aptitude).

Fresh install of Testing (Lenny) (2008-11-03) on a laptop
only using the internal lcd. Using a ~/fonts.conf disabling
sub-pixel redering, hinting, and bitmap fonts
(from /etc/fonts/conf.avail/
