The machine used a 64-bit kernel (linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64) while the
userland was 32-bit. When I use a 32-bit kernel, network-manager works
as expected.
But I need 32-bit userland because of some software, and I need 64-bit
kernel, otherwise that machine takes ages to boot.

Seems I was wrong about network-manager-gnome working better than
network-manager-kde, actually they both do not work.
