Just to let you know that this seems to be fixed in
xserver-xorg-video-vesa 2.0.0-2 (experimental).
I could use a virtualbox with X when I upgraded to it.

I've tested the patch at [1] and it works fine (at least on a Thinkpad
T30): is there any plan to apply it and fix the package?

when i attempt to run startx, the screen goes black, and eventually X
fails to start. downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:1.3.0-4 works fine.
this is running in virtualbox-ose (1.6.2-dfsg-1~bpo40+1) from backports.org.
