I have this problem too.
I am using the nv drivers from xorg with a HP w2207h monitor.
The upstream developers however have fixed the bug with a workaround
committed in revision 2388.

I'm using ATI Catalyst 8.3 driver and I have the same problem. But only one of
my AMD X2 CPUs are being eaten.

render performance with certain drivers.
It's probably best if you discuss this directly with the upstream

I use the 'nv' driver so it's not a driver problem.
