Thanks for letting me know about this problem.
You are right, version 0.7.0 was ignoring the configuration file because of
permission problems and 0.7.1 fixed that.
I just uploaded a fix for the problem you described. The downside is that
now the password is no longer retained at all a

Via dpkg-reconfigure email-reminder, I have set a username, password and smtp
server.
That was working with email-reminder 0.6.0.
I did not take care but since 0.7.0, it was the local exim which was sending
