This is no longer broken, at least with Drupal 5.10 or later. For
instance, a file under the path setting in admin/settings/file-system of:
/etc/drupal/5/sites/freesoftwarecreative.com/files
is linked relative to the web root of /etc/drupal/5/ like so:

(except with a hardcoded symlink).
