Yes I used apt-get for this. The reason is that I already had bootsplash-theme-debian installed, because I had just removed bootsplash to copy the output so I could send it. I removed both and here is what happens:
# apt-get install bootsplashbootsplash failed to preconfigure, with exit status 10
