Thank you very much Evgeni. Looks like there were two issues, one
with the kernel module (now taken care of) and the other with the
fixed font (which I still need to take care of).

This is not fglrx related, your Xorg is crashing, because it does not
find the right font. Check the FontPaths in your xorg.conf
