I'd like to add to this problem, which occurs for me on mounted DVDs.
When triggering "play DVD" from gnome-mount-applet, it starts "totem
dvd://", which won't play the disk.
If I try with totem dv
$ mount /cdrom
$ mount | grep cdrom
/dev/hdb on /media/cdrom0 type udf (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
$ ./disc-test /dev/hdb
/dev/hdb contains a Audio CD
$ ./disc-test /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom contains a Audio CD
$ ./disc-test /media/cdrom0/
/media/cdrom0/ contains a DVD
URL for directory is dvd:///medi

it looks like some progress is being made! but it is still not
workin
note that i also disabled disc automounting the other day via
# hal-disable-polling --device /dev/hda
which may explain why the behavior under gnome changed.

if i attempt to play an unmounted dvd via "Movie" -> "Play Disc", totem
will spin up the dvd, then incorrectly say "Totem could not play 'dvd:/'.
