Think I have some more useful information.
Still having problems with 2.0.3-6 in both backports and unstable.
Thought I was going crazy ;-)
Some times it worked and some times it didn't.
Finally figured out the pattern.

Hate to say this but still has problems :(
At least it works some of the time.
Oddly seems to be worse with odt than sxw files.
Main problem is with existing odt documents. Have one attached.
It doesn't seem to want to save settings.
