I had the same problem. I have a "AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad" ( cat /proc/bus/input/devices ) According to: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Synaptics_Touchpad , the "InoutDevice" section should be very different for Synaptic users as opposed to ALPS users. I solved it by replacing, in /etc/
