If UTF-8 is really not in use and that script is loaded in
~/.irssi/startup , irssi dumps core during startup. Probably the bug is
in that script rather than in irssi. But as long as I am really not yet
in UTF-8-
Can you run strace -o irssi.log irssi and send me irssi.log
