I was finally able to install Debian using the Beta 1 disk. After trying
several drivers manually, I stumbled across the sd_mod module, which
worked (maybe the Intel 945G driver is stashed in there somewhere). I
sure am glad you only have to install Debian once, then upgrade from
there!

PS: I should myself try as I have tons of such Dell machines at
