thanks! that did it. i only checked for the existence of the
z70_hotplugd.rules file mentioned in the earlier bug report. this fixes the
last of the half dozen things

my ipw2100 wireless network card worked fine with hotplug, but after purging
hotplug and installing udev, it fails to start. the firmware is in
/lib/firmware, but the module says it can't load it.
