you can reproduce it by setting the idle time to "blank after 1 minute"
and wait. xscreensaver does not give any error output:
$ xscreensaver -verbose

Hello,
on amd64 I can start xscreensaver-demo and run all screensavers but
after the time elapses and the screensaver should load nothing happens.
On ia32 it's working fine with the same version.
