I have been unable to reproduce your bug. Several revision (some of them adding
patches to the recode_string function) have been uploaded into archive since
the bug has been reported.
Mind check if you still see this bug and/or steps to reproduce it? I'

Some investigation led me to remove all the catagory.u8 files,
and lo-and-behold, everything was OK
I do not understand the 'recode_string' function, but that is
